Director's Notes

All art is about communication; ironically, "Rabbit Hole" is a play where communication has been thrown out of whack. A tragic incident occurs and, in the relationships between husband and wife, daughter and mother, and between sisters, the rules change. What is allowed to be talked about openly, and what shouldn’t be spoken, or is too difficult to convey? At one point, Becca's mother Nat wonders whether it's okay to mention another tragic loss around Becca, telling her "I don't know your rules." This thought hangs over every scene, as each character handles or responds to the aftermath in their own way.

In short, it's the kind of dramatic conflict I find fascinating. I appreciate the natural quality of the dialogue and the humor. Yes, the humor – if this were just a sackcloth-and-ashes drama about death… well, that would be rather unbearable. So, my gratitude to Mr. Lindsay-Abaire for writing such a warm, intelligent script, and my thanks to my cast and crew for their time and work.
