2006-2007 Season The Underpants A wild satire adapted from a classic German play by the renowned comic actor Steve Martin. It is about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public during the King's parade. Though she pulls them up quickly, Theo fears the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise's momentary display attracts two infatuated men, a poet and a hypochondriac, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Maske's home. Theo splits the room, happy to collect rent from both of them; he remains oblivious of their real intentions as well as Louise's extramarital desires, which are being aided and abetted by her friend and neighbor, Gertrude. A delightful, comedic piece that transcends the years and delights modern audiences.
Killjoy Killjoy, (or How To Kill Your Ex- Without Really Trying) is an unpredictable, hilarious comedy/thriller with witty dialogue and fascinating characters. Carol is being driven crazy by her charming monster of an ex-husband, Victor, and his new wife, who employ every trick in the book to end Carol's thousand-dollar-a-week alimony. Carol's quirky kids work at Victor's pasta restaurant chain, and Carol is sure Victor is bullying her son into an early grave. When Carol has a passionate affair with Victor's lawyer, they decide Victor has to die, and the audience cheers its agreement. Killjoy slays with laughs in the tight tale of deception and torment.
Love Letters This unique Pulitizer-nominated play traces the lives of Andrew Makepece Ladd III and Melissa Gardner entirely through their correspondence. Presented in an epistolary style, the story begins with an invitation to a childhood birthday party and follows the character's lives through their respective education and careers.
Jest A Second! Sequel to Beau Jest, performed by the SMCT in 1994, the hilarity continues. Sarah and Bob, now expecting their first child, are hosting a birthday party for Sarah's mother. Her brother, Joel, arrives early to tell Sarah some news that he has put off telling anybody, involving him and his pediatrician girlfriend, Randy. Bob, knowing that the news will not be well-received by his conservative, Jewish in-laws, once again pulls out his acting skills and goes through heart-stopping, thigh-slapping, delightfully humorous impersonating antics to help keep peace in the family. But ultimately, Joel must face his parents and decide how to confess his secret himself. A fun way to end our season!
